Smart thermostats: why ecobee is the pick
Short version: ecobee is the pick, even if your home runs on Google. Its schedule is easier to set up and understand,1 and it links to Google Home and the Google Assistant.2 Nest has real strengths too, like working without a C wire in most homes.3 The pros and cons of each are below.

- Activities are time blocks. Comfort Settings are the temperatures.
- A manual change creates a hold that overrides the schedule.
- If the temperature surprises you, check for a hold or an automation setting.
Why ecobee
ecobee and other brands both get installed in homes, and ecobee is the one to recommend. The reason is practical: its schedule is easier to explain.1 When you know the schedule and which automatic settings are turned on, the thermostat is less likely to surprise you by changing the temperature on its own.1 That holds in a home built around Google too, because ecobee plugs into Google Home.12 This is a field opinion from service calls, not a lab test. Your house and habits matter more than any brand name.
ecobee vs Nest: the pros and cons
ecobee
What is good
- A schedule you can read at a glance: time blocks called Activities, each with its own temperatures, called Comfort Settings.4
- It does not rewrite your schedule on its own. Schedule Assistant emails suggested changes, and you do not have to accept them.5
- When an automatic feature is adjusting the temperature, the screen says "eco+ is on," and you can turn any eco+ feature off.6
- Room sensors: SmartSensors notice which rooms are in use and adjust the temperature for them, and they help it tell when everyone has left.7
- It works with the Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Apple Home and Samsung SmartThings.7
- A 3-year limited warranty.7
What to know
- It needs a C wire. If you do not have one, the Premium and Enhanced come with a Power Extender Kit that a pro installs at the furnace control board. The kit does not work with dual transformer or heat-only systems, and the Essential does not include one.8
- The automatic home-and-away features need an occupancy sensor. The Premium and Enhanced have one built in.7 The Essential needs a SmartSensor, sold separately.7
- A few extras, like listening for smoke alarms, need ecobee's Smart Security subscription.7
Nest
What is good
- It works without a C wire in most homes. Google says the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) needs a C wire or its Power Connector in fewer than 1% of homes.3
- It is built for Google. Setup and control happen in the Google Home app, and the 4th gen is Matter-certified, so other Matter apps and voice assistants can control it too.3
- It learns for you. The older Learning Thermostats and the Thermostat E build a schedule from the changes you make.10 The 4th gen's Smart Schedule can apply changes itself or ask you first,11 and the Nest Thermostat offers Savings Finder suggestions.12
- The 4th gen comes with a Nest Temperature Sensor in the box.3
- It switches to Eco Temperatures when nobody is home, and back when someone returns.13
What to know
- The schedule can change on its own. Auto-Schedule is on by default on the older Learning Thermostats and the Thermostat E, and two similar changes on back-to-back weekdays change the schedule for every weekday.10 On the 4th gen, Smart Schedule's Automatic setting applies changes for you unless you pick Suggestions.11
- Features and menus differ by model and generation, so the steps for one Nest may not match another.12
- Older models lose support. The Nest Learning Thermostat 1st and 2nd gen stopped working in the Nest and Google Home apps on October 25, 2025, and no longer get software or security updates.14
- A shorter warranty: 2 years for the 4th gen bought at retail, and 1 year for the Nest Thermostat.315
- Using a Nest with another company's app or voice assistant goes through Matter, which can need that company's hub.3
Whichever one you pick, know three things: your schedule, what a hold does, and which away or savings features are turned on. For what temperature to set, the thermostat settings guide asks five quick questions and gives you the numbers.
Already use Google Home? An ecobee still fits
ecobee links to Google. In the Google Home app, tap Add, then Set Up Device, then Works With Google, search for ecobee and sign in.2 After that, you can ask Google for the temperature, set it, switch between "HEAT" and "COOL," turn the fan on and go back to the schedule.16 Paired SmartSensors work with the Google Assistant too.2 You still set up the schedule and the eco+ features in the ecobee app or on the thermostat.46
Have an older Nest? If it is a 1st or 2nd gen Learning Thermostat, it no longer works in Google's apps, so it is a good time to choose fresh.14
Which ecobee to get
All three current models use the same Activities and Comfort Settings schedule.4 The differences are the extras.
- Smart Thermostat Premium. The most features. A SmartSensor and an air quality monitor come with it, and you can have Siri or Alexa built in (Siri needs an Apple home hub).7 It has a built-in occupancy sensor7 and a Power Extender Kit in the box.88
- Smart Thermostat Enhanced. Adjusts as you come and go with its built-in occupancy sensor.79 A Power Extender Kit is in the box.88
- Smart Thermostat Essential. The simple one, built around easy scheduling. Add a SmartSensor for the occupancy features.7 There is no Power Extender Kit in the box, so you need a C wire or a kit bought separately.8
How the ecobee schedule works
Start with the schedule, then check which automatic features are turned on. Its schedule is built from Activities (the time blocks in your day) and Comfort Settings (the heating and cooling temperatures and fan setting for each block). It ships with Home, Away and Sleep comfort settings, and you can create more in the app.4 You edit the schedule on the thermostat itself or in the ecobee app. Most ecobee thermostats use Main Menu > General > Schedule. Smart Thermostat Lite and Smart Thermostat Essential use Main Menu > Schedule. You can copy one day's schedule onto the rest of the week.4 Change the temperature by hand and the ecobee places a hold that overrides the schedule. The schedule itself cannot be removed, so if you would rather not use it, set the hold action to "Until I Change It."4
ecobee can automate too. On supported models, Smart Home & Away can override scheduled Home or Away periods using occupancy sensing. It is one of ecobee's eco+ features.9 If the temperature changes when you did not expect it, check for a hold and for eco+ features that are turned on. The schedule is not the only thing that can change it.
Wiring and power
A smart thermostat needs steady power.17 When the C (common) wire is connected, the R and C wires power the thermostat, so it does not need batteries.1 You can look at the wall base for a wire on the C terminal, but leave the wires alone. Wire colors vary, so go by the letter.18 Not every house has a C wire at the thermostat, and some systems need one or a power adapter.17 When the wire run is short and easy, a pro can often replace the old thermostat wire with one that has more wires instead of adding an adapter. That is the more reliable fix, and the adapter is still a good, useful device. Either way, the wiring is a pro job.1 Heat pumps add settings that have to match the equipment. One is the reversing valve setting: set wrong, a heat pump can cool in heat mode and heat in cool mode.19 That makes swapping or installing a thermostat a good job to hand to a pro.
Where to go from here
If your thermostat still changes the temperature on its own after you check the schedule, holds and automatic features, call a pro and tell them what you have already checked. That helps them find the problem faster.

- Field experience. Andrew's own advice from working on home systems: ecobee is the smart thermostat to recommend because its schedule is easier to set up and explain (September 28, 2026), and it is the better pick even for homes on Google's system because it plugs into Google too (November 7, 2026); knowing the schedule and which automatic settings are on keeps the temperature from changing by surprise; with the C wire connected, R and C power the thermostat, so no batteries are needed; on a short, easy wire run, a pro can often replace the thermostat wire instead of adding an adapter, which is more reliable, though adapters are useful devices.
- ecobee, ecobee Google Assistant Setup. Link ecobee in the Google Home app (Add, Set Up Device, Works With Google, ecobee) or the Google Assistant app; supported devices include the Premium, Enhanced, Essential and paired SmartSensors.
- Google Store, Specs & Wiring Compatibility of Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen). Works whether or not the home has a C wire, with a C wire or Power Connector needed in under 1% of cases; setup in the Google Home app; Matter-certified, and other platforms may need a Matter hub; a Nest Temperature Sensor in the box; 2-year retail warranty.
- ecobee, How do I program a schedule for the ecobee thermostat. The schedule is Activities and Comfort Settings, with Home, Away and Sleep built in and more in the app; edit it on the thermostat (Main Menu, General, Schedule, or Main Menu, Schedule on the Smart Thermostat Lite and Essential) or in the app; copy a day to the rest of the week; a manual change places a hold that overrides the schedule; the schedule cannot be removed, so set the Hold Action to Until I Change It to stop using it.
- ecobee, eco+ features: Schedule Assistant. Looks at five weeks of occupancy and emails schedule recommendations, which do not need to be accepted.
- ecobee, eco+: Frequently Asked Questions. The eco+ features, each of which can be turned on or off in the app; the thermostat shows "eco+ is on" while eco+ is active.
- ecobee, Wi-Fi-enabled smart thermostats. The Smart Thermostat Premium, Enhanced and Essential; the Premium comes with a SmartSensor, an air quality monitor and Siri or Alexa built in; SmartSensors adjust for the rooms in use and help tell when people leave; works with the Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Apple Home and Samsung SmartThings; the Premium and Enhanced have a built-in occupancy sensor and the Essential does not, so occupancy features need a SmartSensor on the Essential; Siri on the Premium needs a compatible Apple home hub (HomePod or HomePod mini); some extras, like smoke alarm listening, need the Smart Security subscription; 3-year limited warranty.
- ecobee, Installing your ecobee thermostat with the Power Extender Kit (no C wire). With no C wire and at least four wires, the kit, included with the smart thermostat, installs at the furnace control board; the Smart Thermostat Lite and Essential do not include it and need one bought separately; not for dual transformer or heat-only systems; ecobee points to its app for the step-by-step install and to Customer Support for help (read November 8, 2026).
- ecobee, eco+ features: Smart Home & Away. Occupancy sensing switches a scheduled Away period to Home when someone is home, and overrides a scheduled Home period after two hours with nobody sensed, on thermostats with a built-in occupancy sensor (ecobee lists the Smart Thermostat Premium and Enhanced, the SmartThermostat with voice control, ecobee4 and ecobee3) or, for the ecobee3 lite, Essential and Lite, with paired SmartSensors (read November 8, 2026).
- Google Nest, How Nest thermostats learn. Auto-Schedule, on by default on the Nest Thermostat E and the Learning Thermostat (3rd gen or earlier), builds a schedule from your changes; after a week it learns from two similar changes, and two weekdays in a row change all weekdays; the Nest Thermostat does not use Auto-Schedule.
- Google Nest, Use Smart Schedule on your Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen). Smart Schedule can be Automatic (applies changes and notifies you), Suggestions (you accept or reject) or Off.
- Google Nest, Nest thermostat temperature schedules. Features differ by model: Auto-Schedule on the Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E, Savings Finder on the Nest Thermostat, a smart schedule on the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen); where you change the schedule depends on the model.
- Google Nest, Learn about Eco Temperatures, Eco when away and how to change settings. Switches to Eco Temperatures when it senses no one is home and back to the regular schedule when someone returns; Adaptive Eco on the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen).
- Google Nest, End of support for Nest Learning Thermostats (1st & 2nd gen). From October 25, 2025 they no longer work in the Nest or Google Home apps and get no software or security updates; they still run on the thermostat itself.
- Google Store, Nest Thermostat Tech Specs. Matter certified; 1-year standard warranty.
- ecobee, Google Assistant Commands for ecobee Devices. Ask the temperature, set it, raise or lower it, switch between heat, cool, heat cool and off, turn the fan on and resume the schedule.
- Google Nest, Learn about the common or C wire. The C wire only provides constant power to the thermostat; some systems, heat pumps among them, need a C wire or a power accessory.
- Google Nest, Identify a thermostat wire. Thermostat wire colors can vary and often do not follow industry standards, so do not rely on color alone.
- Copeland (Sensi), How do I configure my thermostat? A thermostat must be set up to match the system; the reversing valve setting matters for heat pumps, and a heat pump that cools in Heat mode and heats in Cool mode needs it changed.
